US import duty for EU Etsy sellers

Shops in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and the rest of the EU now prepay US duty on physical US orders. The good news: EU goods have a cap that most other countries don't. Here's what you pay and how to set US prices so a US sale earns the same as a sale at home.

The EU rule: 10% in total, or the normal rate if higher

Since 24 July 2026, EU-made goods pay a Section 301 tariff that tops the total US duty up to 10%. If the product's normal US rate is already 10% or more, nothing extra is added. So the duty is the higher of 10% or the normal rate, not "normal rate plus 10%" as for UK, Canadian or Indian goods.

Starting estimates from the US tariff schedule. Confirm your exact code at hts.usitc.gov. The cap depends on where the item was made, not where you ship from: a German shop selling goods made in China pays the Chinese rate. Steel, aluminium and copper items can also face Section 232 tariffs.

Worked examples

For a German shop: Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee plus about 4% payment processing, before any duty-handling charge on your label. The "new US price" keeps your take-home the same as a sale at home.

ListingHome priceLost per US sale if unchangedNew US price
Silver necklace (10%)€35.00€3.50€39.41

If your carrier charges a fee for prepaying duty, add it in the checker; it's charged per parcel, so bundles cost less per item.

Etsy's regulatory operating fee

Shops in France (1.14%), Italy (0.80%) and Spain (0.88%) also pay Etsy's regulatory operating fee on every sale, so the US price needs to be a little higher. A French shop's €35 necklace needs about €39.47 rather than €39.41. How the fee works.

How to set US prices

  1. Find each product's tariff code and normal rate (the free checker suggests one from your listing text).
  2. Choose European Union as the country your goods are made in; the checker applies the 10% cap for you.
  3. Add what your label or carrier charges for prepaying duty, if anything.
  4. Set the result as the US price for the listing and each variation. How US-specific pricing works on Etsy.

Common questions

Can my US buyer pay the duty instead? Not on Etsy. Since 9 July 2026 non-US shops must prepay it with a DDP label so buyers aren't charged at the door. DDP labels explained.

Is there still a duty-free limit? No. US duty-free entry for parcels under $800 ended for every country on 29 August 2025.

Did someone pay too much earlier? Duties paid under the old IEEPA tariffs (1 February 2025 to 19 February 2026) are being refunded to whoever was the importer of record, which for most past Etsy orders was the buyer or the carrier, not the shop. Check who can claim.
