## How UAE import charges work

| Value of the goods | What you pay |
| --- | --- |
| AED 1,000 or less | No customs duty (except tobacco, alcohol and restricted goods). 5% VAT, usually collected by the courier. |
| Over AED 1,000 | 5% customs duty on the cost, insurance and freight (CIF), then 5% VAT on CIF plus duty, plus courier clearance fees. |

The UAE uses the GCC common customs tariff: most goods pay 5%, some basic foods and medicines 0%, and tobacco and alcohol much more. Goods made in another GCC country are duty-free with proof of origin.
