New Zealand import duty and GST calculator
Buying from overseas? See whether you'll pay 15% GST at checkout or duty, GST and levies at the border.
How New Zealand import charges work
| Value of the goods | What you pay |
|---|---|
| NZ$1,000 or less | 15% GST charged by the overseas seller at checkout. No duty. |
| Over NZ$1,000 | Duty (0% to 10%) on the goods, then 15% GST on the goods plus duty, shipping and insurance, plus the import entry transaction fee and biosecurity levy. Customs doesn't collect it if duty and GST together are under NZ$60. |
Typical duty rates: clothing and shoes 10%, many other goods 5%, and 0% on phones, laptops, toys and books. Goods from a free trade partner are usually 0%. Check your code in the Working Tariff Document.
