# HS code lookup: find the US tariff code and duty rate

## How HS codes work

Every product crossing a border has a Harmonized System (HS) code. The first 6 digits are the same in every country. The US adds digits to make a 10-digit HTS code: the 8-digit line sets the duty rate, and the last two digits are for statistics.

- **Chapter (2 digits):** the broad family, like 61 for knitted clothing or 71 for jewellery.
- **Heading (4) and subheading (6):** the product and what it is made of. Material often changes the rate: a cotton T-shirt (6109.10) pays 16.5%, a synthetic one (6109.90) pays 32%.
- **US line (8 and 10 digits):** the exact rate and the code you put on the customs declaration.

## Normal rate plus the 2026 extra tariff

The rate in the schedule's "General" column is the normal (most favoured nation) rate. Most countries' goods also pay an extra tariff in 2026, between 10% and 12.5% for the countries in the list, and some have a floor instead (the higher of the normal rate or a set total). The lookup adds the extra rate for the country you pick. Steel, aluminium and copper content have their own Section 232 rates: use the [Section 232 metal-content calculator](https://importdutycalc.com/section-232-metal-content-calculator).

## Questions importers ask

### Is an HS code the same as an HTS code?

The first 6 digits are the same worldwide (HS). The US version, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS), adds 4 more. Other countries add their own digits, so the full code for the UK or EU can differ after the first 6.

### Who decides which code is right?

The importer is responsible for the code. US Customs and Border Protection can check it and change it. If you're unsure, you can ask CBP for a binding ruling, which is free, or look up past rulings in CBP's CROSS database.

### Why does the same product have several possible codes?

The schedule splits products by material, use and sometimes by gender or size. Pick the line whose words all fit your product, starting from the 4-digit heading. If two seem to fit, the more specific one usually wins.

### I sell on Etsy or eBay. Which rate do I use for prices?

Use the total (normal plus extra) on the item price. Our [US price checker](https://importdutycalc.com/#checker) and [Etsy fee calculator](https://importdutycalc.com/etsy-fee-calculator) work out the US price that keeps your profit.

Results come live from the [US International Trade Commission's HTS search](https://hts.usitc.gov/) and are saved for a day. Extra tariff rates by country are DutyReady's summary, checked 4 Nov 2026. This is a starting point, not a classification ruling: check the code on hts.usitc.gov before you file.
