## How EU import charges work

| Parcel value (goods only) | What you pay |
| --- | --- |
| €150 or less | VAT at your country's rate, usually added at checkout by the shop or marketplace (IOSS). Since 1 July 2026, a flat €3 customs duty for each kind of item in the parcel. Since 1 November 2026, a €2 handling fee for each kind of item. |
| Over €150 | Normal customs duty on the goods plus shipping and insurance, then VAT on everything including the duty, plus the €2 fee per kind of item. Usually collected by the carrier before delivery, with their own fee. |
| Gift, €45 or less | Nothing. |

If a shop didn't charge VAT at checkout on a parcel under €150, the carrier collects it at the door with a clearance fee, often €5 to €20.

## Typical duty rates

Clothing 12%, shoes about 8% (up to 17%), bicycles 14%, jewellery 2.5%, and 0% on phones, laptops, most toys, cosmetics, furniture and books. Look up your exact code in [TARIC](https://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/dds2/taric/taric_consultation.jsp) and type the rate in.

## Buying from the UK after Brexit

UK-made goods can come in at 0% duty under the EU-UK trade deal if the seller states the origin on the invoice. VAT is still due. Goods a UK shop bought from China and resold aren't UK-made.
