# US import duty for Australian Etsy sellers

Australia pays one of the higher US tariffs of any Etsy seller country: 12.5% on top of the normal duty, on almost every order. The free trade agreement helps less than most sellers expect. Here's what a US order now costs you.

## What changed

- **29 August 2025:** the US ended duty-free entry for parcels under US$800 from every country.
- **9 July 2026:** Etsy started requiring non-US shops to prepay US duty through the label (delivered duty paid).
- **24 July 2026:** a 12.5% Section 301 tariff replaced the old 10% surcharge for Australian goods. Australia is in the higher 12.5% group, alongside China and New Zealand. The UK, Canada and India pay 10%.

## How much a US order pays

US duty on Australian-made goods is **the normal US rate for the product plus 12.5%**, charged on the price the US buyer pays.

**What AUSFTA does:** the Australia–US Free Trade Agreement removes the normal rate for most goods that are made in Australia, if the claim is made on the shipment. It does not remove the 12.5%. So the best case for Australian-made goods is 12.5%, not zero.

| Item | Without AUSFTA claim | With AUSFTA claim |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Art prints, cards, stickers | 12.5% | 12.5% |
| Candles, soap, skincare | 12.5% | 12.5% |
| Sterling silver jewellery | 17.5% | 12.5% |
| Ceramic mugs and plates | 22.3% | 12.5% |
| Cotton T-shirts | 29% | 12.5% |

Normal rates are starting estimates from the US tariff schedule; confirm your code at hts.usitc.gov. Goods made outside Australia pay the rate for the country they were made in.

## Worked examples

These assume Etsy's 6.5% transaction fee plus about 3% payment processing and a A$3 duty-handling charge on the label. The new US price keeps your take-home the same as an Australian sale.

| Listing (A$) | Duty | New US price |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Silver ring, A$60, AUSFTA claimed | 12.5% | A$73.47 |
| Same ring, no claim | 17.5% | A$78.50 |
| A4 art print, A$25 | 12.5% | A$32.86 |

## Claiming AUSFTA on a small parcel

Australia Post now asks for a 10-digit US tariff code, the country of origin and the value for each item on US-bound parcels. Whether your label service lets you claim the free trade agreement on a DDP parcel varies, so ask Australia Post or whichever carrier prepays your duty. If you can't claim it, price as if the normal rate applies.

## Common questions

**Do digital downloads pay duty?** No.

**Is anything exempt?** A short list of commodities (such as beef, coffee, some fruit and vegetables, and pharmaceuticals) is excluded from the 12.5%. Handmade goods generally aren't on it.

**Will it change?** The Section 301 tariff has no end date, but US tariffs have changed four times in a year. Recheck before you reprice.
