Canada import duty and tax calculator
Ordering from the US or overseas? Enter the price and your province to see the duty and GST/HST/PST you'll pay, and whether the CA$20, CA$40 or CA$150 limits apply.
How Canadian import charges work
| Shipment | No taxes up to | No duty up to |
|---|---|---|
| Courier from the US or Mexico | CA$40 | CA$150 |
| By post, or from any other country | CA$20 | CA$20 |
| Gift from abroad | CA$60 | CA$60 |
Above the limit, duty is charged on the value of the goods and then GST (5%) plus your provincial tax (or HST) on the value plus duty. Goods made in the US or Mexico are duty-free under CUSMA at any value, but taxes still apply. Canada Post adds a handling fee and couriers add brokerage fees, which can be more than the tax on cheap items.
Typical duty rates
Clothing and shoes up to 18%, jewellery 8.5%, furniture 9.5%, bicycles 13%, and 0% on phones, laptops, most toys and books. Check your code in the Canadian Customs Tariff.
