Made in a country with an Australian free trade agreement (China, US, UK, Japan, Korea, India, NZ and others) and the seller provides origin proof

## How Australian import charges work

| Value of the goods | What you pay |
| --- | --- |
| A$1,000 or less | 10% GST, charged by the overseas seller or marketplace at checkout. No duty and nothing at the border (except alcohol and tobacco). |
| Over A$1,000 | A formal import declaration. Customs duty (usually 5% or 0%) on the goods, then 10% GST on the goods plus duty plus international shipping and insurance, plus an import processing charge. |

Over A$1,000 most people use a customs broker or the courier's brokerage service to lodge the declaration. Expect their fee on top, and the Australian Border Force import processing charge (roughly A$50 to A$100 for air and post parcels, more for sea cargo).

## Typical duty rates

The general rate is 5%. Many items are free, including most computers, phones and books. Goods made in a country with a free trade agreement, including China, the US, the UK, Japan, South Korea, India and New Zealand, are usually 0% if the seller provides proof of origin. Check your item on the ABF [Working Tariff](https://www.abf.gov.au/importing-exporting-and-manufacturing/tariff-classification/current-tariff).

## Splitting an order doesn't work

Breaking one order into several parcels to stay under A$1,000 is treated as avoiding duty, and the parcels can be held and added together.
